Competition Terminology
Common terms you'll encounter at tournaments.
- Bracket
- The tournament structure showing who fights whom. Single-elimination means one loss eliminates you; round-robin means you fight everyone in your division.
- Weight Class
- The weight category you compete in. Weigh-ins may be same-day or day-before depending on the tournament.
- Advantage
- A near-scoring action that doesn't fully complete. Used as a tiebreaker when points are equal.
- Points
- Scored for achieving dominant positions: takedown (2), sweep (2), knee-on-belly (2), pass (3), mount/back (4). Numbers vary by ruleset.
- Submission
- A tap-out (physical or verbal) ends the match immediately. The most decisive way to win.
- Disqualification (DQ)
- Loss for illegal techniques or unsportsmanlike conduct. Always check which techniques are legal at your belt level.
- Referee's Decision
- When time expires with no submission, the winner is decided by points, then advantages, then referee's discretion.
- Open Division
- A division where competitors of any weight can enter, often with an absolute (open weight) champion.
